About Planet Saz Designs…

My name is Sarah of Planet Saz Designs. I would adore to bring the heritage craft of vitreous enamel jewellery to The Lustleigh Village Show.

Individual, eye-catching, vibrant, lightweight, enamel jewellery for everyday wear. All kiln fired from my studio in Abbotskerswell, Devon.

Planet Saz Design crafts a range of stud earrings, drop earrings, pendants and brooches. Also, bookmarks and mini box framed art. Pieces vary in price, offering gifts to suit all budgets. I take pride in my work and like to offer an eclectic mix to suit all ages.

I take commissions and love making something of special significance for someone.

Enamelling is the ancient technique of fusing molten glass to metal. At Planet Saz Designs I cut the copper (I also source pre-cut blank copper shapes for more elaborate designs) these are filed and sanded smooth. I enamel the back of each piece, this not only provides extra durability, but it means that copper doesn’t touch the wearer’s skin.

Moving on to the front, this is where my designs come to life. I love experimenting with colour, patterns, textures and effects. Sometimes adding embellishments like floral wafers or Millefiori glass beads.
My kiln fires to around 790 degrees melting the fine sifted vitreous enamel on to the pure copper. Once removed from the kiln it solidifies, bonding it to the copper. The piece will literally be red hot to the eye, as well as the touch! Watching it as it cools and revels it’s finished colour always feels magical, leaving a smooth tactile sheen.

The charm off the enamelling process together with the quirks of the kiln, means that every piece is wonderfully unique – wearable art!

Finishings:-
To compliment the beauty of the enamel, I finish my pieces with either 925 sterling silver chains or plain/coloured wax necklace cords. All earring wires are 925 sterling silver, so hypoallergenic.

Inspiration:-
I take much of my inspiration from Devon’s stunning coastline and countryside. The natural world and a nautical theme play heavily in my work.

Sustainability:-
Care of the environment is extremely important to me and sustainability is at the heart of my business. I’m a member of Make Southwest’s Green Maker Initiative, I try to keep all of my packaging as eco-friendly as possible. I display much of my enamel jewellery on plantable wildflower seed card and I only use paper gift bags and card presentation gift boxes.
Where possible I only purchase materials from UK based small/family owned businesses.
