Lustleigh May Day – Upgrading of the Base…

Lustleigh May Day is one of two major celebrations in the village, and likely the third-oldest continuously operating May Day in England, having restarted in 1905. This makes it one of the most important parts of the intangible heritage of the village.

For the 2025 May Day, the concrete base of the Maypole was found to be moving (when it should be solid and secure), and the committee had to install additional securing straps to ensure its safety for the event. The pole would be exceedingly dangerous were it to fall.

As a first step, we want to engage a registered structural engineer to:

  1. assess the existing base
  2. advise on the correct engineering approach to ensure safety
  3. provide a design for remedial works

The Show is pleased to provide funding to the above project so that the 2026 May Day Celebrations can proceed without danger to the public.
