About Philippa Lewis Ceramics

I am a potter working from a studio at my home in Ashburton making a variety of useable items which are inspired by the rugged landscape, fauna and flora, legends and history of Dartmoor.

For example I make mugs which are thrown on the wheel and then the handle is handmade in the shape of a hare, it is made in two halves then carved and joined to the mug, the hare handled mug is also stamped on the inside base with the tinners hares.

Other items featuring hares are bowls, jugs, yarn bowls, wassail mugs and coffee cups. I also make domestic pieces featuring a rams head where the handles are made from the rams horns and my latest range centres around Dartmoor gorse, all made using my own designs from my own plaster moulds.

Most of my items are glazed in muted colours reflecting the changing colours on Dartmoor like verdigris green, pale blue, oatmeal, and tundra which works well highlighting the gorse spikes.

I make sure my stall has a range of prices with hanging hares, birds and chickens starting from £4.00 rising to £50.00 for larger pieces like three hare handled wassail mugs. I also make a variety of other items including soap dishes, striker pots, chip and dip bowls, coasters and candlesticks
